Potty Update
I thought I would give you a little update on our potty training progress. It has been a little slow going, but we are getting there. Spencer has been wearing underwear for a week now. He still wears a diaper during nap time and bed time - but he has been waking up dry. He's only had 3 accidents over the past week while wearing his underwear. I am very impressed with his ability to go in, use the potty, and wash the potty out all by himself. Spencer was DEFINITELY ready to start using the potty despite all his resistance.
Just last night we had our first encounter with "the big potty" at a place other than home. Spencer REALLY did not want to use the big potty (as in major crying and protesting) but after some heavy persuasion he finally gave in. Don't even ask me how we are going to approach automatic flushing toilets... I am sure that hurdle will come soon enough.
We still haven't conquered going poop in the potty. I promised Spencer we would take him to Chuckie Cheese once he starts pooping in the potty. Who knows how long that will take...I'll be sure to update you when we reach that milestone ;).
Do I have any great potty training wisdom to give you? Not really. There are a few things I think I have learned. It had to be Spencer's decision. Once he decided to do it, he has been doing it fabulously. Was I pushing him to do it? No. I knew better. But I did wonder if it would happen before the time he went to school. He was extremely adamant about not wanting to use the potty. Spencer would tell me he wanted to wear diapers forever and would practically have an anxiety attack when he realized we were almost out of diapers. Seriously. I am not kidding. There were some deep issues there.
What has worked for us? Lots of rewards/bribes, praise, excitement, clapping, shouts of "yay!," and letting him know how proud we are of him. We let Spencer share the news with everyone so they can share in his accomplishment too. As a family, we talk about his success often and remind him of how good it feels to be a big boy.
The potty training is not completely finished... but we'll get there someday. Baby steps.

YAY!!! this is good news!!!
Spencer my little friend- GREAT JOB!! We are all so proud of you...and you too Mom you really are the one who deserves a "treat"!
Oh and LOVE the new look on the blog!
Charlotte freaked out so bad the first time an automatic toilet flushed on her while she was sitting down it took me forever to get her to use the potty in public again.
Now I carry a little pack of post-it notes in my diaper bag and she puts one on the sensor before she'll even sit down.
I was ready to tear my hair out with Seth. One day Tim assured me that he WOULD be using the potty when he left for college. I did NOT appreciate the humor. It is a big deal. Bekka is working on it now. She uses it at least once a day, but is wet almost always. I am waiting for warm weather to put her in training pants and play outside so the mess can be outside! :)
